Mark Hampson

The Flower – Cubism and the Machine
Description of design
Mark has created a pair of stunning geometrical ear pendants, made entirely of platinum and set with princess cut diamonds. Flower buds are represented by princess cut diamonds in collet settings, with branches and overlapping tendrils in various thicknesses of highly polished platinum wire contorted into sharp, crisp angles. Each ear pendant contains approximately 1.2 carats of diamonds.
Inspirations behind the piece
Inspired by a quote by French designer Paul Iribe in 1930, “Sacrifice the flower on the altar of cubism and the machine”, the design represents a literal re-interpretation of a foliate branch, rendered in a wholly cubist or mechanical fashion, totally devoid of curves or organic lines, yet still retaining the essence of a naturalistic floral composition.
About the designer
Mark’s career has followed various fields of design including graphic design, interior and furniture design until last year when he finally decided it was time to pursue his one true passion – design of gemstone jewellery. Over the past year Mark has offered a totally bespoke gemstone jewellery service for local clients and is launching his first tailor made collections from his website this Autumn. Mark also won a Gold Award for Fine Jewellery Design for coloured stones in the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards 2012.
